This
section on development will provide you with the milestones
that are considered in the normal range for each age group
from newborns all the way through adolescence. The most important
thing to understand while reviewing these developmental milestones
is that each child will develop at their own speed. One child
may be behind the average for gross motor but ahead for language.
Another may not have developed language skills but may be
ahead in fine motor. It would be very unusual for any one
child to follow this schedule as written. Do not use this
schedule to determine the exact developmental age of your
child but instead use it as a guideline in understanding the
general issues and expectations of each age group. And remember,
the best advantage you can give to your children in their
development is the attention, caring, and involvement of their
parents. The reading, talking, playing, teaching, discussing,
holding, and caring for by a parent will give a child the
security and background to learn and to explore their environment
with the help and guidance of a trusted teacher.
