Hello, I hope the doctor or anyone can please help us. About a week ago my daughter (almost one year old) was outside and got bit by what we thought was a mosquito on her face, knee, and inner thigh. The bite on her face has since cleared up to less than a little spot, not even raised skin. However, the ones on her leg since yesterday are extremely red and angry looking in almost a perfect circle around the circumference of the bite. Are these even mosquito bites? I am worried! Yesterday we put neosporing and a bandaid on the largest, reddest one on her inner thigh and they just look even worse today. Here's some pictures we took yesterday evening:
(inner thigh)

(knee)

I should also mention that today the redness around the bites today is much darker, almost purple like a bruise. Should we bring her in? ETA: Here's some pics from today:

It's likely a mosquito bite. And it looks like she's allergic. It's a pretty classic pattern. The neosporin is unlikely to help much unless she's scratching. If she's scratching...then you can use a topical hydrocortisone cream 1% and benedryl (I think the dose for benedryl for her age and rough weight would be 1/4 tò 1/2 tsp).

I have TWO children who are allergic to mosquito spit (one who...is pretty bad and the other one who is in the moderate range). I remember my son's first moquito bite on his finger @ 6 months...it swelled...and the mark was still there a month later. By the next spring, his first bite took up the entirety of his cheek and looked similar to a bullseye (don't get this mixed up with lyme disease though).

NOW...GOOD NEWS...mosquito spit allergy subsides as one ages. The best thing to do is avoid...and we all know that it's hard to avoid mosquitos. Long sleeves, Long pants, and DEET (less than 10% deet for kids under 6...we preferred to spray it on the clothes...and give a bath after the deet since it is fat soluable...aka...can be absorbed through the skin). THe bug spray has oil in it...so it will stain clothes. The BAD NEWS...moquito spit allergy is one of the FEW allergies that, in order for it to get better...you have to be exposed aka...bitten. MOST kids...grow out of the allergy between ages 6 and 10...as they age...the reactions become less and less.

If they get on so badly that they get really red...and they start to weep...take her into the doc to get a stronger topical corticosteroid (we have to use elecon)and an Rx for zyrtec (and though zyrtec is once a day, it works better for mosquito spit if you break the daily dose in half and give it twice).

Hi,

They look like bites, not infection. I would use an antihistamine such as Benadryl or if you have prescription--zyrtec, clarinex, or allegra. Hydrocortisone on the bite should help.
